IN THE MAIL

From praise for hospital staff, to the price of fuel at the pumps and the €100 electricity credit to householders, check out our letters to the editor this week...

Credit where credit is due!

A big ‘Thank You’ to the staff of Cavan General Hospital and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

I recently sustained a knee injury while out walking, which left me unable to get up off the road. Fortunately, an off-duty garda from Belturbet Garda Station came to my aid; called an ambulance, which arrived promptly and I was in Cavan General Hospital within a short time after my mishap.

The care I received there from everyone concerned - ambulance crew, nurses, doctors and all ancillary staff - was second to none. Within a short space of time, I had been x-rayed and the results and all of my details forwarded to Our Lourdes Hospital Drogheda. I was transferred there later that night and operated on the following day in one of the new operating theatres.

I have to say that the standard of care in Drogheda was also excellent. The highly-experienced team of doctors and anaesthetists thoroughly explained the procedure to me in advance of surgery and also what to expect afterwards.

The care and kindness shown to me and to the other patients in the six-bed ward by the nurses and staff could not be surpassed.

Within 72 hours, I was back home.

I wish to express my appreciation and gratitude to all the staff in both hospitals and to the Good Samaritans who helped to get me there.

P.J. Bane,

Belturbet

Fuel prices

Madam,

I wish to highlight the price of auto diesel in the Cavan Town area. I travel from Cavan to Dublin as a Bus Éireann driver and watch the fuel prices at most stations along the way.

I’ve noticed that diesel prices at the pumps have fallen twice in the past week by between five to seven cent per litre but, strangely enough, have not dropped a cent in Cavan Town in any of the four filling stations I pass.

This is despite filling stations of the same brand/chain selling the fuel at lower rates at other locations outside of the County Cavan.

As of today three filling stations in Dublin on the Finglas road are selling diesel at €1.59 per litre compared to €1.65 nine days ago.

Why are some Cavan outlets holding their fuel prices?

Is the government out of touch?

Editor,

The government is said to be giving every household in Ireland €100 in January to help cover the cost of their electricity and heating bills.

I feel we have a crisis in Ireland at the moment in relation to homelessness - people sleeping on footpaths in Dublin City and in many more towns in Ireland.

This money in January is been paid to the energy provider at a cost of €200 million. Is this more borrowed money?

This €200 million could be given to help build more shelters for homeless people, who unfortunately have fallen on hard times. Surely they need it more?!

This government is way out of touch.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Carolan,

Bailieboro, Co Cavan
