Defendant on drugs charge refused bail

A man arrested during a Garda operation yesterday was remanded in custody in Cavan District Court this afternoon (Friday). Edwin Akandy (52) of 6 Fair Street House, Fair Street, Drogneda, Louth was refused bail by Judge Raymond Finnegan.

Mr Akandy was charged with two counts of possession of cannabis. The defendant was arrested after drugs were uncovered during a search operation in Drogheda yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. The search, which was part of Operation Tara, saw Gardaí obtain a search warrant for an apartment on Fair Street under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

During the course of the search, a quantity of cannabis herb was seized. The drugs are estimated to be worth in excess of €71,000.

Sergeant Damien Galligan asked that the defendant be remanded in custody. The defendant's barrister, Niamh Murtagh-Quinn, told the court her client is a father of four children, all of whom live in the State.

Judge Finnegan however remanded him in custody to appear before Drogheda District Court on January 10 next.
