St Pat's bow out of MacRory Cup

MacRory Cup quarter-final

St Pat's, Cavan 1-12

St Pat's, Maghera 0-17

St Patrick's College, Cavan crashed out of the MacRory Cup at the quarter-final stage yesterday (Saturday) when they were beaten by Derry side St Pat's, Maghera.

Having recorded draws against St Michael's, Enniskillen and Omagh CBS in the group stage, hopes were high that St Pat's would pick up a first win here and advance to the semi-final of a competition they last won in 2015.

And things were going well as they opened a six-point lead and maintained a four-point advantage, 1-7 to 0-6, at half-time.

A brilliant point from corner-back James McBreen made it 0-3 to 0-1 and corner-forward Daragh Lovett added another from play as the Cavan boys started on the front foot.

Maghera came back into the contest but a mark from Lovett on 23 minutes made it 0-6 to 0-4 and when the Cavan lads rattled the net shortly after when Gowna's Conor Casey belted home after a Maghera kick-out, they were firmly in the box seat.

However, a succession of mostly frees from the reliable Shea McKenna for the Derry side saw them overhaul the Cavan team's lad and eventually run out two-point winners.
