From February 1, motorists who park on footpaths, cycle lanes, or bus lanes face an increased fine of €80.

Stay in your lane!

Motorists are asked to be mindful of pedestrians and other road users when parking their vehicle, as a new fixed charge penalty for motorists caught parking on footpaths, cycle tracks and bus lanes is introduced from February 1, 2022.

The new regulations, signed by Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan, will see the fine for parking at these locations doubling from €40 to €80.

Social Inclusion Officer for Cavan County Council, Deirdre Donnelly welcomed the introduction of the new regulations, adding that increased awareness of the impacts of this type of behaviour was equally as important as enforcement.

“While avoiding an increased fine is likely to be a motivating factor for many people to park legally, I would ask motorists to consider the impact of their actions on their fellow citizens when parking. Those with impaired mobility; particularly wheelchair users; and people with visual impairments are severely impacted by those who park on footpaths,” said Ms Donnelly.

Cavan County Council Road Safety Officer, Brian Tierney added “Parents with buggies and cyclists can also be forced out on to busy roads by inconsiderate, illegal parking. If we all stop to consider the implications of their actions on vulnerable road users, we can help create safer roads and footpaths for all.”
