Council finalising deal on new pothole fixing machines

Cavan County Council is finalising a deal to purchase two new pothole patching machines.

The question was asked at the recent, virtually-held meeting of Bailieborough-Cootehill Municipal District elected members, whether it would be prudent that the council executive consider assigning one pothole machine to each area.

Sinn Féin's Paddy McDonald asked if workers in each area- Bailieborough-Cootehill, Cavan-Belturbet, and Ballyjamesduff- should provided with their own machine, and that way the workload could be managed better.

It was confirmed to the meeting that the council had indeed struck a deal to buy two new patching machines, scheduled to arrive in the county later this summer.

But Director of Services for the MD, Paddy Connaughton said he understood the question and why it was being asked, noting that such a suggestion had been made before.

He explained: “[The assignment of machines] is done on an operational needs basis rather than one per MD.”

He continued by saying that operating in such a manner meant that the council could be more fluid in how it managed its resources, meaning that if a series of roads needed fixing in one area, then machines could be assigned without bother.

A spokesperson for Cavan County Council confirmed: “Cavan County Council is in the process of procuring two new patching machines. Delivery is expected during summer 2022.”
