Applications open for green kilometre scheme

Groups in Cavan can now apply to adopt a section of road under the Green Kilometre scheme.

The programme is an update of the Adopt a Road scheme launched in 2004 and now includes biodiversity and heritage aspects.

Individuals or groups can choose a section of road in their area, around a kilometre in length, which they will then maintain throughout the year. Work includes litter picking, planting native trees and restoring heritage features like gates or walls.

Groups can also carry out work to improve hedging along the route, with an emphasis on traditional hedge laying.

The scheme is being run by Cavan County Council as part of the annual Spring Clean Programme. That project is in turn run in conjunction with An Taisce.

Those who apply successfully to the local authority will be furnished with litter pickers, bags and gloves, as well as having the option of receiving some of a limited supply of native trees available during National Tree Week each March.

The Green Kilometre Scheme forms part of the Council’s Litter Management Plan, as well as supporting national campaigns like National Spring Clean, National Tree Week and Anti-Dumping Initiatives.

The application process has now opened, with application forms available on the Cavan County Council website.
