County to honour Leona

Cavan County Council members have indicated that they will host a civic reception for golfer Leona Maguire as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

It’s understood that Leona, who shot up 17 places in world rankings to a career-high of 20 after her first victory on the LPGA Tour, is amenable to the idea as soon as her schedule allows.

Last September the Ballyconnell golfer was the standout performer as Europe retained the Solheim Cup against the USA, while her most recent success saw her secure the top spot in the LPGA Drive On Championship.

Cllr John Paul Feeley was the first to propose the honour, but Cllr Philip Brady noted Covid regulations for US golf tournaments were very stringent and the golfer had a lot of tournament commitments in the coming months.

Director Of Services Eoin Doyle confirmed contact with representatives of Leona and said, although she accepted the proposal, it may not be for some time: “She said that she will be in contact with us to let us know when their schedule allows her to attend.”

Cllr Madeleine Argue said the Cavan Town Parade committee would like to extend the invitation to the champion golfer to act as Grand Marshal for this year's parade.

Other councillors who backed the proposal included councillors Peter McVitty, Sean Smith, Brendan Fay, Sarah O'Reilly, Patricia Walsh, Trevor Smith and Cathaoirleach Clifford Kelly. Members also congratulated soccer star Leanne McKiernan on her recent form.
