Push for vacant buildings to house Ukrainian refugees

Cavan County Council has been urged to push for vacant State or bank owned property in the county to be used to house Ukrainian refugees.

Over 5,000 people have arrived in Ireland after fleeing the country since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24.

Councillor Seán Smith (FF) praised the response of the people of Cavan in donating money and much-needed items, as well as offering spaces in their homes for people fleeing Ukraine.

However, he said the local authority should ask the State and banks to offer any vacant properties in their ownership for use.

“Throughout the length and breadth of the country there’s good property. The state has an abundance of empty garda stations lying vacant.”

He said property owned by banks in particular would be in good condition and, while it may be in the process of being sold, it could be used to house people.

Cllr Smith said those coming to Ireland were predominantly women and children who “would be delighted to get a roof over their heads”.

His motion called on the council to write to the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Green Party leader Minister Eamon Ryan to urge them to put in place the measures.

Cllr Peter McVitty (FG) seconded the motion.
