Council tributes to Virginia Rugby Club stalwart

Tributes were paid at the April monthly meeting of Cavan County Council following the passing of Virginia Rugby Football Club stalwart, Wilson Green.

Mr Green sadly passed away on April 8, 2022, with his funeral later taking place at Virginia Parish Church followed by burial in the adjoining graveyard.

Mr Green was the local rugby club’s Honorary Life President, having featured in the club’s maiden game on February 27, 1977.

He had been a committee member since the very first days of the club, acting in the roles of secretary and treasurer. In addition to half a dozen stints as club president, Mr Green also served as an Ulster branch representative for many years.

He became Virginia Rugby Club’s Honorary Life President in 2015.

Fine Gael’s T.P. O’Reilly proposed the vote of sympathy, which was supported by fellow council colleagues. He said Mr Green had been a “lifelong” supporter of Virginia Rugby Club who, with several other founding members, assisted in stumping up the necessary funds that eventually paid for the grounds the organisation currently uses.

Independent Councillor Shane P O’Reilly highlighted how Mr Green had served as an Ulster representative for 35 years, and noted the loss that was felt within the community by his passing.

Cathaoirleach Clifford Kelly asked to be associated with the votes of sympathy.

The late Mr Green is predeceased by his daughter Julie-Anne. He is survived by his wife Anne, children Cindy (John), Rachael (Alan), and Belinda (Paul); grandchildren Katie, Adam, Stuart, Megan, Niall, Gavin, Ava and Benjamin; brothers David (Sarah) and Christopher (Jane); nephews Tim Gavin (Andrea) and Andy, and many friends. May he rest in peace.
