Ulster Bank writing to customers ahead of closure

Branches are to close from the second half of this year.

Ulster Bank has begun the process of writing to its customers ahead of its planned closure of branches.

The letters, being issued in tranches, outline the process of moving accounts to other banks. The bank says it's writing to current and deposit account customers, on a phased, rolling basis, to give them six months’ notice to choose a new provider and move and close their Ulster Bank accounts.

The company, which has been a cornerstone of business in the region for almost 200 years, announced last year it would close its 88 branches, including those in Cavan and Monaghan.

However, a deal between the bank and PTSB will see the Ballyconnell and Ballyjamesduff branches move to the latter.

A spokesperson for Ulster Bank says it wants to work with customers affected and help them move:

"This is an important step in the phased withdrawal of Ulster Bank and we recognise that for our customers, especially those who have banked with us for decades, choosing and moving to a new provider requires effort, time and support. We are taking a responsible and prudent approach which includes regular monitoring and evaluation of the progress throughout this process."
