Book of evidence due after fatal crash

The book of evidence is to be served on a man accused of driving a car which crashed, resulting in the death of a young woman outside Belturbet last year.

Jack McHugh (21) of 12 Annagh Park, Belturbet, Co Cavan, is facing a number of charges stemming from the fatal collision on June 26, 2021.

Laoise Grace Nolan from Enniskillen, who was 22 at the time, was killed in the crash, which occured on the N3 at around 12.50am. Four others were injured in the incident.

It’s alleged Mr McHugh was driving the car at the time.

He’s charged with two counts of dangerous driving, one in the Pullamore Far area of Cavan Town and one in the Cormacmullan area.

He’s also facing charges of drug driving and driving without a valid driving licence or insurance.

The case came before a recent sitting of Cavan District Court where Garda Sergeant Damian Martin said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had recommended the case proceed "on indictment", meaning it will progress to the Circuit Court.

Judge Raymond Finnegan adjourned the case to allow for the preparation of a book of evidence.

The case was adjourned to May 26. Legal aid was granted.
