Government committed to finding truth behind Dublin and Monaghan bombings - Smyth

The Government remains committed to "seeking out the truth" of the Dublin/Monaghan bombings, said a local TD on the anniversary of the attrocity.

Deputy Niamh Smyth made the comments having attended a commemoration service alongside An Taoiseach Micheál Martin on this the 48th anniversary.

The bombings claimed the lives of 33 people on May 17, 1974 with hundreds more seriously injured.

"These ruthless bombings were the greatest loss of life in a single day of the Troubles. This Government remains committed to seeking out the truth of the tragic events of that day and their aftermath to try and bring closure to survivors and to victims’ families, whom we stand in solidarity with," said the Fianna Fáil deputy.

Deputy Smyth added: "I have received assurances from An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, that this Government will continue to engage with the British Government with a view to ensuring access by an independent, international judicial figure to all original documents relating to the Dublin and Monaghan Bombings.

"While we continue to work together for a shared future, we must do so remembering and honouring the memory of the innocent victims of a violent past."
