Grants to promote physical activity in older people

Age & Opportunity and Sport Ireland, will distribute €14,690 across 31 groups in Cavan.

More than 30 Cavan groups will receive €14,690 to fund physical activity for older people.

Successful applicants to the Age & Opportunity Active National Grant Scheme were announced earlier this week.

The grants scheme, a combined initiative from Age & Opportunity and Sport Ireland, will distribute €14,690 across 31 groups in Cavan.

The successful Cavan groups are: Lavey Ladies GFC - Gaelic for Mothers & Other, Belturbet and District Men's Shed, Killinkere GFC and Killinkere Social Club, Kilnaleck Mens Shed, Cross Community Hall Comm, Kilnaleck Bowls Club, East Cavan Eagles Basketball Club, Blacklion and Belcoo ARA, Swanlinbar Senior Social Club, Templeport Social Services, Corlough ICA, Ramor Watersports Club, Bruskey ICA, Cavan Social Services, Arva Active Age Group, RehabCare Resource Centre, Killeshandra ICA, Kingscourt Mens Shed, Cavan Local Sports Partnership, Lough An Leagh ICA, Cross ICA, Cavan ICA, Laragh Senior Social Club, Crosserlough ICA, Active Virginians ARA, Oriel Lodge Social Club, Kildallan ICA, Drung ICA, Virginia Men's Shed, Virginia Show Centre Ltd, Kill ICA (Cavan).

Nationwide 995 groups will receive grants totalling €514,120. Of the successful funding allocations, 201 grants were awarded to Active Retirement Associations, 218 grants were awarded to Irish Countrywomen’s Associations, 226 grants were awarded to sports clubs and 22 to Local Sports Partnerships.

Walking, weight lifting, night kayaking, dancing, rowing, yoga, orienteering, swimming, cycling, kurling and bowling are just some of the activities the grant will fund.

Minister of State for Sport and the Gaeltacht, Jack Chambers said the grants are a “further recognition” of the importance of sport and physical activity in the lives of older people.

The Grant Scheme is part of Age & Opportunity’s Active programme, funded by Sport Ireland, and delivered nationwide with the support of Local Sports Partnerships and the HSE.
