Parking metres to get cashless option

Sinn Féin’s Paddy McDonald had highlighted “serious problems” if meters in Cavan are out of order.

Cavan County Council is set to invest in a new parking meters that will offer motorists a cashless option, either by tapping their card or through a new phone App.

Plans to upgrade pay-and-display parking facilities across the county were outlined at Monday’s monthly meeting of the local authority. Senior Engineer for Roads, John McKiernan, revealed that 22 new meters should be installed in the fourth quarter of this year.

Sinn Féin’s Paddy McDonald had highlighted “serious problems” if meters in Cavan are out of order and pointed to cashless systems in other counties including neighbouring Monaghan.

His motion received unanimous support.

Fianna Fail’s John Paul Feeley pointed to Enniskillen in Fermanagh and said that cashless systems were also environmentally as they cut down on paper waste.

Aontú’s Sarah O’Reilly, while supportive, warned against the push towards a totally cashless system, saying it could marginalise some people.
