The summer market hopes to build on the popularity of the Christmas market organised last December

Cavan Summer Market to bring a buzz to the town

A summer market is set to bring a real buzz to the streets of the county town as Cottage Market Cavan host their seasonal gathering.

The community based social enterprise supports four seasonal markets - a weekly, click and collect, local food box and more.

Imelda Mullen, the market co-ordinator with Cottage Market, Cavan told the Celt about the initiative: “We are an artisan food and craft market that pops up in different locations across Cavan showcasing the amazing skills and talents in our county.”

The summer market takes place on Saturday and Sunday, June 18-19, from 12 noon to 6pm on Town Hall Street including Market Square, Town Hall Street and Townhall carpark.

“It will bring a real festive atmosphere to the town,” Imelda explained. “It's very social. We have a 'dine-yard' concept in the Townhall carpark. There will be marquees and seating. The will be live performances by local performers and a 'play anywhere' area for children.”

Imelda says the market is a tremendous opportunity to bring people together: “Our market mix will include hot food vendors, artisan food and drinks, crafts and arts. Summer themed workshops, demonstrations and music will be very much part of the mix and a covered dining area will ensure visitors of the market stay and embrace the culture of Cavan.”

There will be a number of highlights that cannot be missed. They include local live performances brought to you by Droimín Creative Cavan. Town Hall Street will be hopping with six hours of tunes ranging from traditional Irish, rock, pop, jazz, and Indie-Folk.

The music heroes to play over the weekend include: Rafal Szdlowski Band, Martin Donohoe & Friends, Karen McMahon and Elena Duff, and The Munster Connaught Ukulele Group. As well as the stalls, music and play areas, there will also be discussions and craft demonstrations. Imelda says Cottage Market Cavan provides a shop window for the diversity of talents in the locality: “The aim was to create a more local, sustainable community. We really focus on people in the county. We look at what is available in the county, to showcase them and highlight the levels of skills.”

The summer market is an opportunity to promote that ethos: “It will feature our local food initiative: The Green Box Cavan. There are over 20 producers supplying that. We will have the food wan on site. There will be a taster plate of food. All grown in the county.”

Imelda emphasised the inclusiveness of the event: “This is a free event so save the date and embrace the best of local, in season food, arts, crafts and culture.”

This is a fully outdoor market. Parking will be available at the Cavan County Library, Cavan Courthouse and The Cathedral as well as street parking. The event is supported by Created in Cavan, Cavan Arts and Droimin Creatives.
