Ukrainian arrivals to Cavan reach 680

Almost 700 Ukrainian refugees are being accommodated in Co Cavan.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show 680 were living in the county on June 5, the date figures were collated.

Of those, almost half (314) are living in the Cavan-Belturbet area. The next highest figure, 231, is in the Ballyjamesduff area, with 135 in the Bailieborough-Cootehill MD area.

The data was produced by the CSO using PPS number applications from people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The data also shows 165 children and teenagers have been enrolled in schools in Cavan. The majority, 112, are attending local primary schools with the remaining, 53 in secondary schools.

The CSO says 35,670 PPS numbers have been issued to people from Ukraine under the Temporary Protection Directive put in place by the Government after the start of the conflict.

Women and children make up the bulk of those coming from Ukraine, accounting for 48% and 37% of the total respectively.

42% of arrivals are classed as “one parent with children”, which the CSO says means “spouses/partners may have stayed in Ukraine”.

A number of locations across Cavan are being used to accommodate refugees, including the Agricultural College in Ballyhaise and a number of hotels and B&Bs across the county.

The sports hall at the Cavan town leisure centre was closed for a number of months to allow it be used as emergency accommodation if needed.

However, it has since reopened. Cavan County Council has confirmed it was not needed as part of the country's emergency response.
