Deputy Pauline Tully TD “Shop local and support your local businesses”.

Buying locally is good for us all – local TD

The vibrancy of Ballyjamesduff is down to the tight-knit community that works together to a common goal.

Part of that is social and part economic and one local representative says, though times are tough, people realise the value of togetherness. The importance of shopping locally was highlighted by local Sinn Féin TD, Pauline Tully.

Deputy Tully said the benefit of supporting local producers may not be obvious, but it has a long term effect: “It can be difficult to make the choices, but buying locally sourced food in season makes more sense. It may cost a little more at the point of purchase, but it's the healthier option and better for you and your community in the long run.”

Pauline says, by buying locally sourced meat, fruit and vegetables, shoppers are guaranteed quality, helping the environment and supporting businesses that are part of their community: “It's not an easy choice for many people. That has to be recognised. Things are very tight at the moment for many families, but shopping locally makes sense.”

Deputy Tully believes Ballyjamesduff is thriving at the moment, but says the imminent closure of Ulster Bank is a blow to the local economy: “Many of our local towns have lost out because of bank closures. Ballyjamesduff is a case in point. It does force people to other population centres. That's something we should look to try and reverse.

“There will be no bank in Ballyjamesduff. Now, if people want to bank in person, they are compelled to go to Oldcastle or Cavan Town. If people go to those towns to conduct business in a bank or post office, the will naturally do other business. So it has a diminishing effect on a town,” the Sinn Féin elected representative said.

Despite the bank closure, Ballyjamesduff is in a good position: “It's heartening to see the businesses throughout Cavan who have dealt with the challenges of the last few years and are coping with the challenges presented by the current economic situation,” Pauline said.

Deputy Tully commended the local volunteers who continue to work hard for the betterment of the local community: “Ballyjamesduff is fortunate to have so many local volunteers for community activities. They work hard for community and sporting bodies in their area and are the engines of the local communities.”

She concluded by thanking the people of the are for their support in the last year and looks forward to serving them in the future.
