Cavan Bus Station set to reopen

The station will now be open seven days a week from 8am to 7pm from Friday, July 1.

Bus Éireann will commence the reopening of Cavan bus station for customers from this coming Friday, July 1.

The station will now be open seven days a week from 8am to 7pm.

Closed since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been questions over why it has not reopened along with the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.

Cavan’s is a busy commuter station for people working in Dublin and the lack of covered areas or toilet facilities has been widely and soundly criticised.

The station building itself is owned by Bus Éireann but its restaurant and other facilities are operated by a private contractor.

The reopening has been welcomed locally.

Commenting, Cavan-Monaghan Fianna Fail Deputy Niamh Smyth, said: “This will be welcome news to so many commuters who have contacted me on this issue.”

She added: “I have ongoing discussions with Bus Eireann in recent weeks on this issue and I am happy to confirm that the cafe will also be reopening to allow customers to grab some food or a drink while waiting for their bus. Security staff will also be on-site seven days a week.

“I have also been advised that on-site works will be ongoing in the coming weeks, weather permitting, to give the bus station a fresh coat of paint for all of our customers in County Cavan.”

Party colleague and fellow Oireachtas elected member Brendan Smith also welcomed the move.

“Bus Éireann have carried out the necessary preparatory work and they state that the Café will be re-opening and also the indoor toilet facilities for customers.

“This is a welcome development for people using public transport in Cavan and also passengers travelling through Cavan to other destinations.”
