Graham to ‘take a few weeks’ before deciding on his future

Cavan manager Mickey Graham will take some time out to decide on his future after his agreed four-year term came to an end with the conclusion of the season on Saturday.

Cavan were favourites from the outset to win the Tailteann Cup but after victories over Down, Fermanagh and Sligo, the wheels came off against Westmeath last Saturday. Cavan were in the game most of the way but without playing well and the concession of a soft goal late on proved their undoing as an impressive Westmeath took the spoils.

It is understood that Cavan selector Martin Corey informed the players in the dressing-room after the game that he will be stepping down. The Monaghan native has been part of the set-up for four years, having previously trained Castlerahan when they won the Senior Championship.

It remains to be seen whether Graham will opt to continue. The Cavan Gaels clubman stated that he will take his time before deciding whether to remain on as manager or not and it is believed he has the full backing of the county board.

“It’s four years now and that was the term I signed up for. Look, I’ll not make any decisions at this moment in time. It has been taxing mentally, it is tough, it’s a full-time job this inter-county management. It does take its toll,” he said.

“There’s no point making decisions at this moment in time. I’ll let the dust settle, take a few weeks off, recharge the batteries and talk to people around me to see what the next step is.

“It’s been a great privilege to represent Cavan as a player, it’s been an even better privilege to manage them. It is a dream come true for me and a great honour and no matter what happens moving forward, I’ll always be grateful for that.”
