Work on next phase of Cavan Town Greenway continues

Work on the next phase of the Cavan town greenway is underway as tenders have been issued.

€300,000 has been earmarked for civil engineering consultancy services as part of planning for the project.

Cavan County Council has issued the tender, calling for engineering consultants to carry out planning work on the next phase of the popular greenway, running from the end of the current greenway to Butlersbridge.

Phase one, which was opened last summer, links Cavan General Hospital and Loreto Road.

It’s hoped the greenway will eventually link Cavan town with Ballyconnell, via Butlersbridge and Cloverhill. It would then form part of the wider Ulster Canal Greenway project.

Submissions on the tender can be made until August 15.

Work is also continuing on the 40km planned greenway linking Cavan town and Ballyconnell. Plans for the route were revealed by The Anglo-Celt in May. Public consultations were held in June ahead of the expected selection of the preferred route.

One of the proposed routes follows the path of the former rail line running from Cavan to Belturbet and Ballyconnell. All routes run from Cavan Town to Butlersbridge and Cloverhill where the greenway branches towards Castle Saunderson and Belturbet.
