Bogus caller posed as Garda

Appeal witnesses to suspicious incident in Bailieborough.

Gardaí in Cavan are investigating an incident where it has reported that the home of an elderly couple was attended by a bogus caller impersonating a member of the force.

The incident occurred at around 10.30am on Wednesday morning last, August 3, where a lone male called to the home of an elderly couple living in the Drumbannon area of Bailieborough.

The person, according to gardaí, claimed to be "a member of the garda detective branch" and enquired whether the couple had "lost money".

Gardaí report: "Thankfully his ploy didn't work and he left empty handed".

The person it is said left the air as a passenger in a light blue coloured car, and gardaí are now trying to trace the movements of this vehicle in the local area as part of a wider investigation.

The same style scam has been perpetrated elsewhere across the region, where the person's targeted weren't so lucky.

Gardaí are now asking that anyone who may have witnessed persons or anything suspicious in the area of Drumbannon on that morning, or days after, or know anything about the movements of the light blue car, to contact them at Bailieborough station on 042 9694570.

"Remember to be vigilant when it comes to cold callers to your post," warned a spokesperson for the force, reminding homeowners to "always ask for identification and never leave a cold caller alone at your door".

They add: "Don't open your door unless you are sure of the identity of the caller."
