Championships get into full swing this weekend

GAA news

The championships get into full swing this weekend, with 19 matches down for decision across Senior, Intermediate and Junior.

Attendances were exceptional last weekend for the opening rounds in the Intermediate and Junior Championships, with Arva sending out a strong message of intent in the Junior with a big win over a highly-regarded Drumlane.

At intermediate level, Templeport turned some heads when they had an eight-point victory over a Cootehill side who played in Division 1 of the league, with Ballyhaise seeing off Belturbet despite having three players dismissed.

Cuchulainns and Castlerahan, meanwhile, played out a cagey, low-scoring draw at a packed Dolan Park in Virginia.

There are a number of local derbies down for decision this week, including Cuchulainns v Bailieborough, Cootehill v Drumgoon, Denn v Castlerahan, Maghera v Mountnugent and, notably, Swanlinbar v Corlough, who previously amalgamated for a short time before going their separate ways.

The Senior Championship gets underway with some mouthwatering ties. Kingscourt Stars meet champions Ramor United at Kingspan Breffni on Friday evening, with Crosserlough and Cavan Gaels facing off at the same venue on Saturday in a repeat of the recent Division 1 league final which was a free-scoring classic.

Mullahoran, recent winners of the Division 2 league, take on familiar foes Ballinagh, with Lavey meeting Lacken.

Elsewhere, Gowna and Killygarry will clash for the sixth time in seven years and for the fourth time in the opening round since 2016.
