Blue car sought over fatal hit-and-run

Gardai narrow accident investigation to Thursday night between 9-11pm.

Gardaí investigating the fatal N3 hit-and-run last week, that claimed the life of local man Frank Nulty, are seeking information about a navy coloured or dark blue Mazda 6 car.

The vehicle will have damage to the left headlight, gardaí say, as well as to the left side of the car, left-wing mirror, and possibly the windscreen also.

Gardaí attached Bailieborough, who are leading the investigation into the Cavan man's death, have also narrowed the time of when they believe the incident occurred. Their appeal for information is focusing between the hours of 9pm and 11pm along the N3 at Billis Bridge on Thursday, August 18.

The car was travelling southbound from Cavan and in the direction of Virginia when Mr Nulty was struck.

Investigating officers have since the accident called to local businesses and other premises along the N3 to gather available CCTV footage hoping to identify possible leads.

The new time frame means the body of Mr Nulty (57), which was laid to rest yesterday (Tuesday), may have been lying by the side of the road for close to 14 hours before being found by a passing cyclist shortly after midday on Friday, August 19.

The initial garda investigation had focused between 10pm on Thursday evening and 12pm on Friday, August 19. Their appeal was for anyone with information in relation to the hit-and-run to make contact, as well as any person aware of a vehicle with unexplained damage in the wider Cavan area.

Mr Nulty was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services arrived.

The location is just minutes from Mr Nulty's home at Drumfomina, New Inns, Ballyjamesduff.

A post mortem took place over the weekend. It is understood the injuries he suffered were consistent with that of a pedestrian involved in a hit-and-run.

Mr Nulty is predeceased by his parents John and Agnes, and survived by his sister Geraldine Pritchard, Mountain Lodge, brother Tommy New York, niece Ashling, nephews Michael, Gavin and Kevin, grandnephews, grandnieces, extended family.

His death is also deeply regretted by his wide circle of friends, and also workers at Kyte Powertech who last Friday deferred a planned strike action after learning of colleague's death.

Local Fine Gael Councillor, Val Smith, this week made an emotional appeal for the person or persons involved in the hit-and-run to come "come forward".

"Now is the time," he said. (See this week's Anglo-Celt newspaper)

Gardaí continue to appeal to any road users on the N3, or who observed any unusual activity in the area at the time the hit-and-run is believed to have occurred, to make contact.

That includes any drivers that may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between these hours to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bailieboro Garda Station on 042 969 4570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
