Liz Truss resigning as UK Prime Minister

Truss goes after turbulent 45 days as UK Prime Minister

The British Prime Minister has announced her resignation this lunch time with a speech on Downing Street.

Acknowledging she could not deliver the mandate on which she was elected as Conservative leader, just 45 days ago, Prime Minister Liz Truss announced she is resigning

Her resignation simultaneously fired the starting pistol on finding her replacement. She said she would remain on as PM until her successor was installed, within just one week.

Opposition parties have already insisted there must be a general election.

Today's development comes days ahead of the 62nd plenary of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly will be held at the Farnham Estate Hotel in Cavan on October 24-25.

An Taoiseach Micheál Martin and the Liz Truss appointed UK Northern Ireland Minister Steve Baker will address the assembly on Monday. British Ambassador to Ireland, Paul Johnson is also due to speak.

Lawmakers from Ireland and all the British legislatures, and others gather twice a year to discuss matters of mutual interest.

Politicians from all these areas are due to debate trade while three of its Committees will present reports to members, including on the impact on UK-Irish trade of Brexit from the Economic Affairs Committee.
