Wolfe Tone Street closed for roadworks

Wolfe Tone Street in Cavan Town will continue to be closed to traffic until next Friday to facilitate resurfacing works.

The L2539 Wolfe Tone Street and Glenside Road closed from its junction with the R212 College Street/ Coleman Road to its junction with the L2541 Swellan Court last (October 24) and is expected to remain closed until Friday, November 4.

The closure is in effect from 8am to 6pm each day (excluding Saturday and Sunday).

The plans to resurface the road on Wolfe Tone Street follow major water infrastructure upgrades carried out earlier this year.

There was consternation however with some residents at the time complaining about not just the level of disruption caused, but the lack of communication with locals around the water pipe project.

Delays in the replacement of pipes on nearby Bridge Street impacted the start date of the Wolfe Tone Street section of the project, necessitating a two week extension of the street’s closure.

Work began in early 2020 to replace large sections of Cavan Town’s water pipes and the the resurfacing is a follow on to that.

The council has though provided a list of alternative routes for road users impacted by the Wolfe Tone Street closure.

Motorists can travel via the R212 (Coleman Road), R198-0 (Railway Road & Farnham Road), R198-1, R198-2, L1519-0, L2539-0 (Swellan and Glenside Road) and vice versa.

Diversions are being signposted, and “local access only” will be accommodated “as far as practicable”.

“During particular stages of the works, the L2539 Wolfe Tone Street will be open to facilitate only traffic entering and exiting Kilnavara Lane,” say the council.
