Workmen were on standby to try to prevent a repeat of last week's flooding of homes on the outskirts of Cavan Town.

Last Friday, flood water swept into six homes at The Maples, a housing estate in Gortnakesh. The homes lie below the road level which means in flood conditions, water can gush down their driveways.

Cavan County Council today attended the scene to try to redirect some of the water build-up during today's downpours.

Members of the council worked to clean drains, and dig up areas surrounding the driveway to direct the water's flow into a nearby field.

Council staff attended the scene numerous times this week following complaints from the residents. On Friday, residents stated that three inches of water had flooded into their homes.

The council offered each home owners sandbags to help protect their properties.

According to one resident, flooding was last an issue in this area about seven years ago.

Cavan County Council spokesperson told the Celt: "Following recent flash flooding incidents affecting six houses in the Gortnakesh area, Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District staff have maintained contact with residents and have implemented temporary mitigation measures at the site.

"The MD team will investigate further preventative measures following a full assessment of the affected area."
