Councillors to head west

The December monthly meeting of Cavan County Council is to be held in St Patrick’s Hall, Glangevlin, “a first” for the small rural community, says Cathaoirleach John Paul Feeley who believes it will be a “positive” experience for elected members to better understand the rural west of the county.

As per tradition, the December meeting is held in the home area of the sitting Cathaoirleach.

“I am delighted to be able to continue the longstanding tradition of hosting the December meeting of the County Council in my home area,” says Cllr Feeley, who adds that the agenda will deal with “all of the normal work” of the council and include a presentation on Croí Cónaithe, the funding to support for redeveloping derelict houses in towns, villages, and now rural communities.

“Places like Glan, and throughout West Cavan, there are all too many houses no longer occupied. This new funding provides support for change that can only be positive,” remarks Cllr Feeley.

“Getting councillors and officials out and about in county is very important so that those not familiar with this part of the county can get a better understanding of the issues in West Cavan,” he added.

Before the meeting, councillors and executive officials will be briefed by Grainne O’Connor, manager of the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark, on the ongoing cross-border cooperation between Cavan and Fermanagh, and the status of developments at the Shannon Pot, Cavan Burren Park and elsewhere.

After the December monthly meeting concludes, the Cathaoirleach’s traditional Christmas Dinner will take place at MacNean House and Restaurant, Blacklion.

Cllr Feeley believes proprietor Neven Maguire has been a “great ambassador” for his home village, and the Cavan brand in general, and intends to pay tribute to the award-winning local chef and his team. “Neven Maguire has created an extraordinary brand and provided huge employment in a small rural village. I, and the local community are very proud of his achievements. He is a great ambassador for Blacklion and County Cavan, promoting quality food and our county at every opportunity. I know that my pride in Neven and the hard work of his staff is also shared by my fellow councillors,” stated Cllr Feeley.

“I am delighted through this Christmas Dinner to, in a small way show our appreciation for Neven and his staff.”
