Locals appreciate council improvement works

Residents in Latt and Keadew in Cavan Town are said to be “very happy” with the standard of works carried out in the local area.

Investment under the Active Travel Scheme saw a new footpath installed beside the L-5538 and improvement works also carried out on the roadway.

The Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District meeting heard from its chair, Fianna Fáil’s Patricia Walsh, that residents had been in contact to express their delight at the work being done.

“It makes a huge difference,” she said.

Senior Engineer Paul Mulligan welcomed the feedback, and was in turn highly complementary of the staff involved in the work, to which McCabe Group were contracted.

He said it had been an “extremely tricky job” to complete.

Similarly, work had been carried out at Swellan (L-1519) where a footpath had been extended leading up to the Cavan Rugby Club, and a project to install lighting on a new footpath connecting the Slieve Russell Hotel and Ballyconnell Town is also nearing completion. “Some parts still need connecting,” he said of the lighting, but noted that the required ducting was in place along the N87 route.

Drainage improvement works had been carried out at Rafian, Belturbet (L-5518), and also at Sean Lee Drive where there had been an “issue going back years”.

Reinstatement had been completed with regard to the road surface, and Mr Mulligan said the work was “appreciated by the people” living in the area. A drainage issue on the N87 Daisy Hill, Ballyconnell had been “sorted out” too. Council staff were continuing to work on a section of the Cavan Way Trail on the R206 where Mr Mulligan assured councillors that “great work” had been done.

“You see people walk out on the road. That takes people off the road.” Finally, Mr Mulligan credited the winter maintenance crews operating in the Cavan-Belturbet MD, saying it was a “difficult job”.

“It’s all appreciated,” said the area engineer.

Mr Mulligan signed off by telling councillors that works in the pipeline included improvements to the roads connecting to Garvagh Lough and also Rann Point.
