Unsettled weather on the forecast

Weather update from Met Éireann

Met Éireann predict cold weather, which will give way to more unsettled condtions later next week.

A dry and mostly cloudy start today (March 11) with icy stretches but rain will spread from the south through the morning and afternoon, turning to a mix of sleet or snow at times. Some freezing rain and black ice is possible in places too. Cold with afternoon highs of 1 to 3 degrees in moderate to fresh southeasterly winds, increasing fresh to strong.

The last of the rain clearing early tonight and it will become mainly dry with some clear spells but cloud will increase later. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees will occur early in the night with temperatures gradually rising to between 5 and 8 degrees overnight. Winds becoming moderate west to southwesterly winds.

Sunday will be mostly cloudy with patchy drizzle developing in the morning in places. More persistent rain will develop in the afternoon and evening with some heavier falls possible and the chance of some spot flooding. A much milder day with highest daytime temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees, in moderate to fresh south to southeasterly winds.

Going forward unsettled weather expected with low pressure in the Atlantic feeding in rain and showers across Ireland, occasionally wintry in parts, and bringing blustery winds at times too.

Sunday night will be windy with widespread rain or showers, some of which may be heavy. Lowest temperatures of around 7 to 9 degrees generally, though possibly turning colder in the northwest towards morning. Fresh and gusty southwesterly winds will be strong at times in coastal areas.

On Monday there will be widespread showers or longer spells of rain, turning wintry in nature later over northern hills as strong and gusty north to northwesterly winds develop over the country, bringing coastal gales. Some bright or sunny spells will develop too in parts in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 5 to 7 degrees in the west and northwest but milder at 10 to 12 degrees elsewhere.

Monday night looks very cold with moderate west to northwest winds and lowest temperatures close to freezing across the country. There will be some wintry showers feeding in also with some sleet or snow in places.

Tuesday looks to be a cold day with highest values of 4 to 7 degrees. It will bring a good deal of dry bright weather with sunny spells but a scattering of showers too, especially early in the day, and there is potential for these showers to fall as sleet on higher ground.

Rain will spread from the southwest on Tuesday night and Wednesday, preceded by some sleet or hill snow for a time. Much milder then for the latter part of next week but remaining unsettled with some more rain or showers.
