Cavan go for gold in Ulster Scór final

County Cavan will compete in six out of eight disciplines in the Ulster final of Scór na nÓg this weekend in Three Mile House, County Monaghan.

Cavan Scór chairperson Michael McGibney said it was a “strong entry” from the Breffni county signalling great hope for the future of Scór in the county and its role in the wider GAA organisation. He wished the competitors and clubs the best of luck in the competition.

“Win or lose, these talented young people have already represented their county with pride and distinction. We, as a Scór committee, are greatly encouraged by the level of participation with 18 clubs involved in the first rounds in the county and five of those advancing to the provincial finals. We hope to build on that going forward,” said the Cornafean clubman.

First up on Saturday, Niamh McCaffrey from Cornafean will represent the county in the Ulster finals in solo singing. The talented singer will perform ‘Isle of Hope’ and accompany herself on guitar.

Niamh will later be joined by Áine McGibney, Ellen Creegan, Aideen Martin and Keelin Martin in the Ballad Group competition. They will sing ‘The Hills of South Armagh’ and ‘The Broad Magestic Shannon’.

In the second half, Laragh GFC will compete in the Novelty Act with their play ‘The Dodgy Optician’. The young actors are Cian Reilly, Colm Shiels, Ciarán Shiels, Joseph McGreevy, Lauren Brady and Chloe Sexton.

The Smith family from Lavey GFC will take to the stage in the instrumental competition. Naoimi, Andrea, Shania and Keenan Smith will play two tunes ‘The Orphan’ and ‘Michael Russells’.

Then it’s the turn of the Lacken Set Dancers: Eoghan Gunn, Harry Sheridan, Charlie Sheridan, Patrick Caffery, Edel O’Reilly, Aoife Sexton, Méabh Gunn and Annie Crowe. They will dance ‘The Plain Set’, figures one and three.

Well done also to the ceilí dancers from Mullahoran and Killeshandra’s Owen Nulty in recitation who represented the county in the semi finals.

A team from Drumlane GFC, meanwhile, will represent the county in the Tráth na gCeist segment of the Ulster finals. They are Carla Cassidy, Caoimhe Brady, Ríain Galligan and Enda Burke.

The finals are this Saturday, April 15.
