Cavan Singers on ‘Top of the World’

Cavan Singers are to return later this month with their Summer Proms.

Titled ‘Top of the World’, the musical event with special guest Fr Darragh Connolly, takes place at the Hotel Kilmore in Cavan Town on Wednesday, May 17, at 8pm (doors 7.30pm).

It’s been a few years since Cavan Singers hosted a Summer Proms, and chair Fidelma Sheridan says the title is apt in that it reflects the mood within the singing group, which operates under the musical directorship of Claire O’Reilly.

“The last concert we held was with the Celtic Tenors in 2019, and then Covid hit,” explains Fidelma.

“We also do a Summer Proms but this is the first since before the pandemic.”

Cavan Singers is set to celebrate 40 years next year also.

Fidelma says the upcoming proms will feature “a mix of feel good” sing-along songs and classical music, from ‘Colours of the Wind’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ to ‘What a Wonderful World’.

Fr Darragh Connolly will sing his own solo songs, as well as playing the uilleann pipes with some accompanying musicians.

There will be solo performances too from Terry O’Connor, Brian McKeever, and a duet with Pauline Brady and Martina Lee Boyle.

The Cavan singers have see their ranks bolstered by a number of new arrivals. “We’ll have about 50 to 60 singing on the night. It’s a wonderful achievement,” said a proud and delighted Fidelma.
