A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana confirmed they are investigating the Cavan “assault” in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Teen hospitalised after suspected stabbing incident

A teenager was hospitalised following a serious street assault in Cavan Town at the weekend.

The incident, which is under investigation, is believed to be linked to an alleged unpaid drug debt. A knife or other sharpened weapon is suspected of being used in the attack, which occurred on Main Street shortly after midnight last Saturday, May 13.

The running battle, involving a number of males, was captured by bystanders and shared widely on social media since.

One man can be heard shouting at another to “scratch” the other with an implement he appears to be holding.

Dozens of people standing in the street can be seen watching the shocking events unfold.

The attack lasted less than a minute before tensions dissipated and gardaí arrived.

One man, aged in his late teens, was later taken to Cavan General Hospital with what have been described as “non-life threatening injuries”.

It’s understood no arrests have been made to date, and investigations into the matter are “ongoing”.

It is the latest in a string of similar type incidents to have occurred in the county in recent times, after a video emerged in March of street fight in Ballyjamesduff on St Patrick’s night appearing to show a person armed with what is known as ‘friction stick’ or telescopic baton.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána confirmed that they are investigating the Cavan “assault”.

“One adult male aged in his late teens was conveyed to Cavan General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries sustained as a result of this incident.”

The spokesperson adds: “No arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing.”
