Cavan biodiversity projects get €30K boost

A trio of conservation projects in County Cavan have received a funding boost today.

Cavan Council Council received almost €30,000 to cover the cost of three projects under the Local Biodiversity Action Fund (LBAF).

Actions arising from the Cavan Biodiversity Plan will receive €10,200, as will a feasibility study for the management of aquatic invasive species, while a bat survey is set to receive €8,500.

Meanwhile Monaghan County Council will receive a total of €100,000 for three projects, also through the LBAF. The most notable of these is a flora book of County Monaghan (€46,750) and a Wetland Action Plan (€34,091).

The funding was announced today by Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform Malcolm Noonan as part of a combined €2.7m in funding for local biodiversity projects nationwide. Of that sum, €193k is being granted to the natural history recording community through the Small Recording Grants scheme.

The funding was welcomed by Deputy Brendan Smith.

"The Local Biodiversity Action Fund is an impactful scheme that supports local authorities and communities to deliver on Ireland’s national objectives for nature, from invasive species to habitat restoration to awareness-raising to surveys and monitoring work”, stated Brendan Smith TD.
