Leona to tee off at Mizuho Americas Open

28-year-old has already notched up three top-10s on the LGPA Tour this season.

Cavan’s Leona Maguire will tee off this evening at the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Located on the shore of the Upper Bay of New York Harbour the tournament features a theme of mentorship and education.

It also includes a girls’ 72-hole, modified Stableford tournament featuring 24 juniors to go along with the 72-hole stroke-play event for 120 LPGA professionals.

Michelle Wie West is serving as the tournament host, and the prize purse tops out at $2.75 million this week, with the winner taking home $412,500.

During the first two rounds, the AJGA players will all be paired together.

During the final two rounds, one junior player will play with two LPGA pros with groupings based on scores. The unique format marks the first time the AJGA and LPGA have partnered to showcase junior and professional competitors playing together.

Leona in a beginning to hit a rich vein of form. The 28-year-old has already notched up three top-10s on the LGPA Tour this season, most recently finishing joint-third in the semi-final of the Bank of Hope LPGA Match-Play at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Leona is building her game ahead of a busy few weeks ahead, including the KPMG Irish Open and the Solheim Cup in the autumn.

The Women's US Open will meanwhile be held at Pebble Beach for the first time in early July.
