Kells Road Races forced to take a different approach this year

This year the CCs Unlimited Kells Road Races team had to cancel their annual motorbiking event that takes place in Crossakiel, due to the lack of insurance coverage.

They haven't allowed this obstacle to stand in the way of them celebrating their sport and social event completely - they will now hold a novel fundraising event on 25th June with all funds going to ‘Dads Cycle for Charity’, a group of local men that raise funds for charities in Meath.

They chose this charity as they want the money they raise to go back into the community as well as recognition for “small groups that give up a lot of time,” said Diarmaid Corcoran, one of the organisers.

The run will leave Park Ri, Kells, at 12pm on Sunday and will finish at Crossakiel. All motorcyclists are invited to take part and there is a €10 entrance fee which will all be going towards the good cause. They are not expecting as big of a turn out as previous years; however, are positive they will see their “die hard” fans at the gathering.

As one of Ireland’s biggest motorcycle events, the cancellation has left members of the group “frustrated”.

Motorcyclists raise millions a year in Ireland but others negative perception of bikers has “forced the Irish Talent Team to ship their young talent abroad,” said Diarmaid, due to the uncertain future of bikers in Ireland. This charity run will hopefully encourage more people to show their support for the racing community as well as the Dads' Cycle for Charity organisation.

2023 has been quite a difficult year for motorcycle racing enthusiasts in Ireland with over 100 cancelled events due to the non-availability of insurance. Requests have been put forth the Government to make it easier for danger-related activities to get insured, but until they are met the bikers are doing all that they can to save the future of their sport.

At the end of the route participants can enjoy a tea or coffee whilst chatting amongst others involved. There will potentially be surprises on the day, small prizes such as medals. Kells Road Races invites all to their sporting event to enjoy the day out with fellow racing enthusiasts.

Dads Cycle for Charity showed their gratitude towards the organisers through their social media. “Adding a different kinda bike to our cycle this year!! Thank you Kells Road Races and the motorbike community for their support this year”.

Kells Road Races, although frustrated by the cancellation, are happy to be “marking the event” in any possible way.
