Irish Water issue do not consume water notice to Drum

A do not consume notice issued for all customers supplied by the Drum Public Water Supply Scheme, which also affects customers in Kilsherdany and Dernakesh.

The notice was given due to elevated levels of manganese detected on the network.

It applies to approximately 43 customers supplied by the Drum Public Water Supply Scheme

The notice was given following a consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE), Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Monaghan County Council who said it is especially important that mains drinking water is not given to bottle fed infants.

The council also issued a notice saying it wasn't safe to boil water. They said "'please note this is not a boil water notice. Boiling the water will not reduce manganese levels and is therefore not a suitable measure to make the water safe to consume. Domestic water filters will not render water safe to drink. This notice does not apply to other areas and water schemes in Monaghan."

Tankered water is currently available from 10am on Thursday morning in Drum Village to provide an alternative water supply to customers, where the council ask that customers are to use their own containers when taking water from the tanker and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure.

Uisce Éireann drinking water compliance and operational experts are working with colleagues in Monaghan County Council to resolve this situation as soon as possible.

Speaking about the imposition of the notice, Peter Gallagher, Operations Lead with Uisce Éireann said: “Uisce Éireann is aware of the impact a do not consume notice has on the community and would like to reassure impacted customers that we are assisting the Group Water Scheme to lift the notice as quickly and as safely as possible.
