Over €1.2 Million for Market House community hub

Funding of €1,200,742 has been allocated to date to refurbish the Market House on Ballyconnell’s Main Street.

The sum from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF) will be used to convert the house into a Community, Remote Working and Tourism Hub.

The project is due to be completed in September 2024, with the contract for construction in the process of being awarded. Work will commence on the site in the coming weeks.

Historically, Ballyconnell was a market town and the house, built in 1838, played a central role both socially and economically. Work to modernise the house and bring it back to use like it was in its former days is highly anticipated by the people of the town.

“It will be marvellous,” Cllr Peter McVitty said, explaining they will have a facility for meetings, a space for remote working, and a centre for tourists to find more information on the town of Ballyconnell.

The house has been cleaned out by Cavan County Council and stands as a “stone shell" and “structurally, it is in very good condition”, according to Cllr McVitty.

“There is a big job to be done on it now," he said, explaining that the town is telling “a good story” at the minute with enthusiasm high for its reinvigoration.
