Cavan support offers comfort to rally driver’s family

Rally tragedy.

The family of the late Daire Maguire, who tragically lost his life in an accident last week, have said they have drawn much comfort from the support expressed by the people of Cavan.

Speaking about the support, Daire’s older brother Eamonn Maguire stated: “I want to say a very heartfelt thanks to the Cavan people for being so generous on RIP.ie and being so generous in coming to the funeral, providing guards of honour and coming to the funeral parlour.

“It was highly evident he was very popular because over the two days I think we had about 3,000 people call to the funeral home and there were dozens and dozens of people from Cavan.”

Dáire Maguire (46) from Lisnaskea, Co Fermanagh and Gene O’Donald (35) from Barraghy, Cootehill, both lost their lives while competing in the Sligo Stages Rally on Sunday, July 16.

Eamonn explained that while Daire was a Fermanagh man, his links to the Breffni County were strong.

“In 2005 myself and Daire came down to Cavan to set up a retail business called Maguire Tiles and Bathrooms.”

He explained the recession then arrived in 2008, however the pair powered through before their business finally called time in 2012.

“We were seven years in the Breffni Retail Park beside Paco. Great times were had there and we built up the business in County Cavan and surrounding districts.”

Daire then secured a job in another business in Cavan Town where his face became even better known to the people of Cavan and beyond and they remembered Daire through the Tile Business and that was “very nice”.

“It’s amazing when you look back at Daire’s life and the friendships and even before he came to Cavan.”

Eamonn outlined how Daire had been widely known in the area prior to his work through his love for rallying. “He was very involved in motorsport and he would have had a lot of connections in Motorsport Cavan and Monaghan and he would have navigated for a lot of people.”

Daire’s family were deeply moved by the heartfelt thoughts and tributes left by the people of Cavan on rip.ie.
