Andy’s friends and family joined him on Saturday to climb Croagh Patrick.

Over €26K and climbing for cancer charities

A local family has raised more than €28,000 to help families affected by cancer - smashing their original €25,000 target.

The Kelly family and friends climbed Croagh Patrick last Saturday in difficult conditions following ‘Storm Betty’ to raise funds for Cuan Cancer Support Centre in Cavan; Cavan Monaghan Pallative Care Fund; and the Oncology Unit at Cavan General Hospital.

“Until you need them you don’t realise how much love, care and respect they have for patients and family members.

“It’s just unbelievable what they do,” Andy Kelly said of the local organisations.

The hike took place on August 19 to mark the 43rd wedding anniversary of Andy Kelly and his late wife Breege (August 21).

Breege sadly passed away on December 9, 2022, just 10 weeks after she was first diagnosed with oesophagus cancer.

Breege had wanted to thank each of the organisations that helped her throughout her diagnosis, with plans of doing so at Christmas time, but she never got the opportunity.

That’s why Andy organised the fundraiser “to keep Breege’s memory alive".

Andy sincerely thanked everyone who has donated to date and to those who have supported him since his wife’s passing. He particularly thanked the organising committee, who helped him in setting up the fundraiser.
