‘Shameful’ rise in homelessness - Tully

Rising homelessness in the constituency exposes how much worse the housing crisis is becoming under the current Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil government.

That’s the view being expressed by Sinn Féin TD for Cavan-Monaghan, Pauline Tully.

She made the comments following the publication of the latest figures from the Department of Housing, which reveal that homelessness in Cavan and Monaghan increased by almost 39% in the last two months, with 12,847 people now homeless across the state. Twenty-five of those are now homeless in the Cavan Monaghan constituency.

“This includes adults and children, who are experiencing the devastating reality of the housing crisis.

“It is abundantly clear that the longer Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are in office, the worse the housing crisis is becoming. This is their appalling legacy that has heart-breaking consequences for the real people at the centre of this crisis,” said Deputy Tully.

She contends that Sinn Féin in government would get to grips with the housing crisis. “We would treat the issue with the seriousness it deserves, to prioritise delivering genuinely affordable homes to rent and purchase in Cavan-Monaghan. We went reinstate the eviction ban for no fault evictions, to protect renters while housing supply is increased,” said the local TD.

“It’s time for change. It’s time for a government ready and willing to end the housing crisis in Cavan-Monaghan,” concluded Deputy Tully.
