Deputy Niamh Smyth

Over €120,400 in new funding for local sports projects

A total of €126,400 in funding has been awarded for sports projects across Cavan-Monaghan.

The boost, announced today, is part of a significant €4.86m Investment Package in Dormant Accounts Funding in Local Sports Partnerships and Active Disability Ireland. The funding awarded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media was welcomed by Local Fianna Fáil TD, Niamh Smyth.

The Dormant Accounts Fund enables unclaimed funds from accounts in credit institutions in Ireland to be utilised to support the development of individuals who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, or those affected by a disability.

The areas of focus for the funding include Youth Leadership, Volunteer Supports, Disability Training, Girls Get Active, Urban Outdoor Adventure Hubs, Active Cities, Community Sports, and Physical Activity Hubs. Sport Ireland will work in conjunction with Local Sports Partnerships and Active Disability Ireland to deliver these initiatives which will contribute towards the objectives of the National Physical Activity Plan.

Welcoming the new round of Dormant Account Funding, Deputy Smyth claimed the funding "proves" Fianna Fail’s commitment in Government to bring the benefits of sport and physical activity to those experiencing disadvantage or with disabilities.

"Funding for dormant accounts has a real impact on individuals in our community here in Cavan and Monaghanand this new round of funding will help support those living with disadvantage or with disabilities in our community to have greater opportunities to participate in activities they have a passion for. I am happy to continue working with Sport Ireland to continue to boost engagement in physical activities within our local community.”

Sport Ireland has also announced a second round of Dormant Accounts Funding later this year. With this additional funding, Sport Ireland aims to further enhance and expand its initiatives to reach even more individuals and communities throughout Ireland.
