Cavan players celebrate after the LGFA All-Ireland U16 A Championship final replay match between Cork and Cavan at TUS Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

Civic receptions to be hosted for footballers and Olympians

Civic receptions will be hosted to honour the success of two groups of local athletes.

Cavan County Council will host a reception for the Cavan All-Ireland U16 A Final Replay winners on November 9.

Cavan overcame a dogged Cork side to win the A title for the first time in 50 years at the TUS Gaelic Grounds in Limerick 2-13 (19) to 1-13 (16). The only other time the county lifted the title was in 1977.

The council will also recognise the achievements of the Breffni Blues Special Olympics Club on November 13, specifically bowler Angela Cleary from Killeshandra and kayaker Eoghan Comerford from Ballinagh.

Both returned home from the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Berlin with a haul of medals. It was the first time the local club had athletes attend the games.

Eoghan won bronze in the 500 metre competition and silver in the 200 metre event.

Angela, meanwhile, claimed a bronze medal in the doubles bowling event, a sixth in the teams, and fourth in the individual competition.
