Funeral to take place of female cyclist killed in Monaghan

The funeral of a female cyclist killed in a road accident at the weekend will take place on Thursday.

Jenny Drew (née Convery) from Beaghkearns, Monaghan Town, lost her life after a car collided with her bike on the Cootehill Road close to Monaghan Town on Saturday afternoon, October 21.

Aged in her 70s, Ms Drew was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. Her body was removed to Monaghan Hospital for a post mortem and the road was closed for a time to allow an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators.

Emyvale Cycling Club was among those to post a tribute online: "[We] wish to convey our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Jenny Drew. Jenny was a very familiar face to all of us, as she glided past on her bike. May she rest in peace."

Locals described Ms Drew as an “absolute lady and an exceptionally kind person”. She had been involved in a Meals on Wheels service in Monaghan town for a number of years.

Garda appeal

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them. They are particularly interested in dash cam footage from the Cootehill Road at around the time of the accident, between 12:30pm and 1:30pm. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Monaghan Garda Station on 047-77200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda station.

Mrs Drew is survived by her husband Matt, daughter Karen, son Barry, son in law Anthony, her sister Mary and extended family and friends.Her funeral mass will be celebrated in St Macartan's Cathedral, Monaghan, this Thursday at 11am. Cremation will take place later at Lakeland's Crematorium, Cavan.May she rest in peace.

To date in 2023, 154 people have lost their lives on Irish roads, up almost a third on the same period last year which saw 118 people killed. The figures are accurate as of 9am on Monday, October 23.
