Cllr wants planning for modular homes ‘relaxed’

A local councillor wants the government to relax planning regulations around the building of modular units in specific circumstances, such as on farms, so that transition to the next generation can more easily be facilitated.

Fine Gael’s TP O’Reilly said that there are people living in the same house as their children who could better be accommodated in a custom-built modular unit on site.

He accepted that it would not be the solution in every situation but suggested it might help free up properties. “There is an opportunity there,” he told the November monthly meeting of Cavan County Council, while asking that a letter be sent to Minister for State for Local Government and Planning, Kieran O’Donnell, on the matter.

The motion was supported by Independent Shane P O’Reilly who said that younger generations are already finding it difficult to get a foot on the property ladder.

He said there are already situations where people are living in modular units without planning.

“There has to be a happy medium,” he said.

Carmel Brady (FG) agreed, saying that, often when children move home, it is to become a carer for an elderly parent.

Cathaoirleach Philip Brady also supported the motion.
