A century of change at Connolly Brothers

2023 was a big year for Connolly Brothers in Cavan Town as the gift shop and toy store celebrated 100 years in business.
The third-generation family business, currently run by husband and wife team, Paul and Fiona Connolly, first opened its doors in June 1923.
Its humble beginnings started in general hardware, flooring, fancy goods, and China. The business quickly became one of the main suppliers of bicycles in the region.
Fast forward 100 years and the business has evolved to continue to meet the changing needs of it customers. Connolly Brothers also run a successful online gift shop - forgetmenotgifts.ie - and boast a strong and vibrant presence on social media.
“We overcame many challenges including a world war; four recessions and a pandemic,” said Paul.
“We have survived through our willingness to change and evolve. Now we offer toys, souvenirs, occasional giftware and memorial gifts. We have extended the range to include Cavan and Irish artisan food and crafts and showcase what is on offer in Cavan.”
At Connolly Brothers, the customer is king (or queen)!
“Our service has always been personal and has made childhood memories down through the years. We were the first place that Santa visited back in the 1980s and now Mamma Elf (Fiona) comes every December,” reveals Mamma Elf herself.
Connolly Brothers were always trailblazers, having run a Christmas Club for over 40 years. “When customers have issues setting up their train set on Christmas Eve, we went and set it up for them. For our website, we deliver a prompt service to our online sales and inquiries on social media. We put a thank you note and sometimes free items into the packages. It’s the personal touch that matters!”
Meanwhile, Fiona says that the couple are focused on finding their niche within the community and are never afraid to go the extra mile to stand out.
“We dress up on special occasions and have a bit of fun,” she continued. “People love it and so do we because we have seen an increase in sales both in store and online; so we are delighted. God knows what’s next for us but we want to overhaul the website and hire more staff,” she revealed of plans as they head into their second century in business.
“We are proud that Connolly Brothers is a 100% independent Cavan owned family business serving several generations locally, nationally and internationally.”
