Ballyconnell WWT plant to be upgraded

Uisce Éireann has secured planning permission for the upgrade of the Ballyconnell Wastewater Treatment Plant facility at Doon.

The proposed works comprise the installation of a manual bypass channel with a manually raked bar screen, a new storm overflow chamber, a grit removal system and relocating the existing screen upstream of the SWO.

The plans also include the installation of a new above ground PFT and the decommissioning of an existing PFT.

A new storm tank cleaning system will be installed, as well as new storm return pumping station, wash water pumping station, and the full automation of existing RAS/WAS system.

A GRP kiosk to house an electrical control panel will be installed, and planning also provides for all ancillary site works. A Natura Impact Statement (NIS) was prepared in respect of the proposed development, which was granted with a total of 16 conditions attached. Plans for the Ballyconnell facility are currently at 'Stage 2 Preliminary Business Case' which involves Uisce Éireann undertaking a detailed analysis of the project, while developing a short list of solutions. This stage also includes estimating the total cost of the proposed project, a spokesperson confirmed to the Celt previously.
