Milltown National School sings songs of victory

The school has received a prize of €1000 following their win

A Cavan school has started the New Year on a high note having won a national singing competition.

Milltown National School Choir was crowned one of 10 winners nationally in the recent competition, run by SPAR, receiving a fantastic cash prize of €1000.

School teacher Niamh Kelly explained the choir are “feeling fantastic” following the win.

Milltown School Choir was set up in the last school year by teacher Niamh Kelly who says “from the start, students have shown great interest and tremendous talent".

The competition was aimed at getting the nation singing along to the theme song 'Finding Christmas' of Spar’s award-winning Christmas TV advert.

With a total prize fund of €10,000 to be won, Spar launched the school’s choir competition asking schools around Ireland to apply by uploading a karaoke version of the song.

The competition received entries from all over Ireland.

“Each school had to send a video of their choir singing the song and send it to SPAR,” explained Ms Kelly.

Milltown NS was informed of the great news that they were one of the 10 schools chosen in the country to be a winner of €1000 for their school.

The choir are now deciding how to spend their winnings.

“Either a day trip for the choir or resources to be used for the choir in school. It will be fully spent on the choir and their wants,” said Ms Kelly.

The Spar competition is just one of the many activities the choir has engaged with since it was formed.

“The choir has entered Peace Proms this year and has been practising very hard for this event to be held in the SSE Arena Belfast this coming February.”
