Snow and ice warning for Cavan

Temperatures are set to plummet tonight as a status yellow snow and ice warning kicks in for Cavan, Monaghan and Connacht with temperatures set to dip to minus three.

Met Éireann say a band of rain will turn increasingly to sleet and snow on Thursday.

The national weather forecaster is warning road users of Ice on untreated surfaces, hazardous driving conditions, travel disruption and poor visibility.

The weather warning will kick in at 2am in the early hours of Thursday morning and remain in place until 6pm that day, February 8.

Meanwhile, looking to today's weather, this morning will be cold with frost and icy stretches; mist and fog locally too. Dry and calm with high hazy sunshine for much of the day. Some showers will affect northern areas. Later on, thickening cloud will feed patchy drizzle into southern fringes. Cold with highest temperatures of just 4 to 7.

Frost and ice setting in for a time tonight under clear skies. Wintry outbreaks of rain will gradually move up from the Southwest, turning to sleet and snow in parts towards morning, especially across the West and the North-Midlands. Lowest temperatures of -3 to +2 degrees, coldest across Ulster. Light to moderate easterly winds will freshen later.

Thursday will begin cloudy and breezy with wintry outbreaks, bringing some further sleet and snow in places. Moderate accumulations are possible, especially across the North, West and parts the North Leinster with a light dusting possible elsewhere. Wintry outbreaks will persist across the North with sunny spells and some showers gradually developing elsewhere. More general rain will arrive into southern countries later. Cold with an added wind chill factor owing to a brisk easterly wind. Highest temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees generally; somewhat milder however across southern counties with highest temperature of 7 to 11 degrees.

On Thursday night, rain and sleet will persist across Ulster with outbreaks of rain elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees. Northeast winds will be quite brisk across the North and Northeast, and mainly moderate in strength across other areas.

Staying unsettled on Friday with scattered outbreaks of rain; some sleet possible across Ulster. Highest temperatures of just 3 to 7 degrees, a little milder though across southern counties. Winds will be cyclonic variable mainly light to moderate, again fresher across the North and Northeast.

Calm with long clear spells overnight on Friday with scattered showers, possibly merging to longer spells of rain at times across the North. Lowest temperatures of -1 to 3 degrees with frost and ice.

Generally cloudy on Saturday with scattered outbreaks of rain, most prevalent across the South and East. Highest temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees with in light variable breezes.

Similar conditions after-dark Saturday night but with frost and ice where skies stay clear. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees.

Staying unsettled on Sunday with further scattered outbreaks of rain, turning wintry in parts later. Some sunny spells in parts too. Highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees. In moderate to fresh northwesterly winds.
