Deputy Niamh Smyth and Dr Rory O'Hanlon

Dr O'Hanlon turns 90

A local TD paid tribute to Dr Rory O’Hanlon who celebrated his 90th birthday this week.

Over a lengthy political career the former TD served a Minister for Health and Minister for the Environment in Charlie Haughey's governments.

Locally he was instrumental in establishing Holy Family School in Cootehill, which serves children with learning disabilities in both Cavan and Monaghan.

Dr. Rory O'Hanlon celebrated his 90th birthday on Wednesday.

“Heartiest congratulations to my dear friend, confidant and Fianna Fáil colleague,” said Deputy Niamh Smyth.

“My best wishes to him, his wife Teresa and all the family on this special occasion. I want to thank Rory for his constant encouragement, support and advice over my term as a Dail representative for the Monaghan people. He has always been so generous with his time and advice, which I deeply appreciate.

“Rory, you are a cherished member of our party and your community in Carrickmacross. Rory Breithlá Shona.”
