Cavan among ‘highest’ for drugs intimidation

County Cavan has one of the highest incidents of drug-related intimidation reported by gardaí in the country. The development emerged during a Dáil discussion earlier this month when the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, was asked to provide the breakdown of arrests made through the Drug-Related Intimidation Reporting Programme in 2023.

The information revealed that the Cavan/Louth/Monaghan Garda Division shares joint 8th place in the country with the Dublin Metropolitan Region south central with 19 incidents of drug related intimidation reported in each division.

The Minister told the Dáil session that An Garda Síochána continues to target those involved in the sale and supply of illegal drugs through Operation Tara.

“The garda commissioner has tasked an Inspector in every garda division to respond to the issue of drug-related intimidation,” Minister McEntee continued.

“There are currently 30 nominated garda inspectors appointed to act as liaison officers for the Drug-Related Intimidation Reporting Programme, covering each Garda Division.”
